Life as We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer
A normal life is all Miranda has ever known, until everything changes with one asteroid. Nobody in the entire world expected what happened, and this situation was a complete shock to all.
In Life as We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer, Miranda lives an average life with her brothers, Matt and Johnny, and her mother. When they hear the news that the largest asteroid known to record is going to hit the moon, everyone, including Miranda’s friends and family, are extremely excited. But the second the asteroid hits the moon, everything that could have possibly gone wrong, went wrong. The moon is knocked out of orbit and it looks a lot larger than before. Miranda, not really knowing how to react, says, “I looked out my window just now. I tried to look at the moon, but it just scares me” (26). Miranda and her family have to figure out the best way to survive, with no electricity that comes on in segments at a time, and with a limited amount of food. Their struggle continues but they come up with a routine that helps them get through the days that seem to be getting worse.
There were many reasons that this book stood out to me. Because it is written in the form of a diary, I can relate to the main character in many ways. She likes to be independent, which I can agree with. She also has a humorous personality which adds a great element to the story. I love realistic fiction/ science fiction books, and so far this book has been a pleasure to read! There are funny, scary, and sad parts which allow me and any other reader to connect to Miranda on a personal level. I do not recommend this story to people who may be scared by the storyline, because it could be frightening to read about the whole world falling apart. To me, it is scary to imagine this happening in real life, but it adds suspense that makes me enjoy reading the book.
Overall, this book was very enjoyable to read. Every page so far has something new and exciting to think about. I have unfortunately only read half of this book, but I am incredibly excited to see what will happen next. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys science fiction and realistic fiction books because that is the genre of this book. It is an incredible story and it feels as though I am following along with Miranda throughout the book.
