On the Run

Fake ID
By Lamar Giles

How would you feel if you were constantly on the run, moving from city to city, all because of someone else’s bad decisions? Nick Pearson, whose real name is Tony, was put into this situation in the first half of Fake ID by Lamar Giles. At the beginning of the story, the reader sees the protagonist on his first day at a new high school who introduces himself as Nick Pearson, hiding his real name from the reader. He runs into bullies, girls, and potential friends all while acting strangely secretive for some unknown reason. At the protagonist’s home, the reader learns that Nick and his family are in WitSec, which is short for the Witness Security Program, because of his father’s criminal activity and his relationship with Kreso Maric a criminal that has been on the run for a quite a while. This is the reason for all the constant moving that he and his family have to go through and the reason for their fake names. They have moved a numerous amount of times because Tony’s father continues to commit crimes but, unfortunately, they learn from Bertram, their Deputy Marshal, if something happens again they won’t have the protection of WitSec anymore.

After having read the first section of this novel, I really enjoyed the story that was told in this book. The way the novel introduced information followed by intriguing questions really kept me interested. For example, when the reader learns the protagonist's name we know that he isn’t telling us his real name which made me curious so I kept reading. Also, almost every chapter ended in a question or a thought-provoking question such as when the protagonist was invited to a “Dust Off” at the end of the chapter and I wanted to read on so that I could later find out that a “Dust Off” is actually the name for the parties that one of the characters will host who is named Dustin. I also felt a strong connection to the protagonist because his situation really reminded me of how my high school experience is going so far. I connected with his views of making friends and dealing with classes. This made me feel really good just because it was a reassurance of how there are other people in the world who are in situations very similar to mine which caused me to make a very personal connection with this novel. One of the other reasons why I liked this novel was the perfect timing for when new information was introduced to the reader. I enjoyed how it was a little fast paced because I feel that books can get really boring if they linger on a topic for too long and can make the reader lose interest. Almost every chapter, the reader was introduced to something new and interesting and it made me curious as to what new information the next chapter might bring which kept me reading.

I would recommend this book to high school boys that enjoy reading about mysteries. This is because I felt a real personal connection to the protagonist and it was one of the reasons why I found the story so interesting. I feel like if someone wanted to enjoy the book as much as I did they would have to make similar, or different, connections. It was also such an intriguing mystery because of the way the author presented information along with thought-provoking questions so, if you do enjoy mystery novels, this is definitely something you should add to your reading list.
