Isolation of Life
Rylie Warren
Room
by Emma Donoghue
Imagine growing up in one little room: not experiencing the rest of the world, and being in there for the first six years of your life, with no exposure to anything else but what you know in “room.”
The breathtaking true story, Room by Emma Donoghue, narrated by a five-year-old boy, is about a mom and her son, living in an eleven by eleven foot shed that they refer to as “room”. At the beginning of the story, Room is the only world that Jack knows of and has given it a name as well as chair, table, bed, skylight, and other inanimate objects in Room. Six years ago his mother was kidnapped from who they refer to as “old Nick;” she was severely mistreated and has been held hostage ever since. Every day she tries her best to teach Jack about what other five-year-olds are learning about, she tries to explain how there is life outside of Room but he just doesn’t believe it. He thinks everything that he sees on T.V. is fake, just another cartoon that he watches, and the only things that could be real are things in Room. As the book goes on Jack and his mom end up finding a way to change the life that they had been living but go through many challenging obstacles in order to accomplish their plan

Although reading this book can be difficult because of the life that Jack and his mother had to live, it shows you important life lessons along with how lucky we all are today. You may find the first couple of chapters boring because of how Jack just talks about his daily life, but once you reach the turning point of the story, I can assure you it will be hard to put the book down. Even though this book will hit close to the heart, it brings you through the mindset and emotions of a six-year-old boy who has never experienced life outside of Room, which I thought was a great adventure to read about. The way the story was told made me so interested in how a boy at Jack’s age could go through something so life-changing but doesn’t even realize and just thinks he is living a normal life.
I would recommend this book to people that like reading non-fiction and hearing about people’s life-changing experiences that made them who they are today.
