Project 17 by Laurie Faria Stolarz

Exploring places can be fun, but exploring a haunted place is even more fun. Exploring abandoned places can uncover dark secrets and uncover the dangers lurking in the shadows.

Project 17 by Laurie Faria Stolarz is about a group of teens that go and explore an abandoned mental hospital. Things take an unexpected turn from when they first got there to when they leave. They only went there to film for a contest but ended up solving a mystery about a girl named Christine Belle who took her own life while in the asylum. The asylum had many dark secrets that were hidden.

During their stay at Danvers State Hospital, they found a girl named Christine Belle’s journal, after they found it, weird occurrences started happening. While exploring the dark asylum the group came across a room with a doll hanging from the ceiling as someone had just placed it there. The scary thing about it was that it was swinging like someone had touched it before any of the group members opened the door to the room. The doll started screaming that it wanted to die. While down in the basement the group was filming for their project, the door that they left open so they could get back upstairs, got shut and locked while they were in the middle of filming. Christine Belle was 17 years old when she died, and her tombstone had the number 17 on it, as it stated in her journal. Throughout the book, the group got signs from her. From the ceiling, 17 rocks fell, and one of the group members found her watercolor painting. In the journal, it also mentioned a doll that was Christine Belle’s best friend that she wanted someone to take care of after she died. Christine Belle became the main priority of the book after they found the journal. Towards the end of the book, the group goes to find Christine Belle’s doll. When they went out for fresh air and walked out to a balcony off the auditorium, they realized how she died. She jumped off the balcony to take her own life. When the group turned around to go back in, there was a chair that wasn't there when they first walked out. When they went to check it out, they saw that it had the number 17 of the back of it. They checked under the chair and under it was Christine Belle’s doll taped under the chair. After they found the doll they were happy that they could help Christine Belle by taking care of her doll.

I would recommend this book to horror or mystery book fans. This book has a lot of suspense in it. I love this book and would read all day every day. There is a lot of detail and unexpected turns. I would rate this book a 5/5. I loved the detail and the dark secrets that were uncovered of a real-life situation.
