Gain the Throne or Face Death
Thara Belony
Three Dark Crowns
By Kendare Blake
How far would you go for something that you want?
“Three dark queens are born in a glen, sweet little triplets will never be friends - Three dark sisters all fair to be seen, two to devour and one to be Queen”. (epigraph)
On the island of Fennbirn, one set of triplet girls are born. These girls are special in a way that no others on this island are, for they are all queens. The twist in this story is that only one of the queens are able to reign. Each of them is born equal and with a gift from the island’s goddess, either the elemental gift, the naturalist gift, or the poisoned gift. Mirabella (the eldest), Arsinoe (second born), and Katharine (the youngest) are required to fight to the death for their crown. Who will be the last one standing?
Personally, I had mixed feelings about this book. The characters were engaging but there were a lot of slow parts. I enjoyed how the reader was given the perspectives of each of the sisters and of the people closest to them. The beginning of the book was interesting because we were given a bit of a view into the very different lives of the sisters. According to the rules of the island’s goddess, not all of the sisters are destined to reign. Readers don’t necessarily have to choose between the sisters but I know that that is what usually happens when people are reading the book. One part of the book that I did not like was how one of the queens began to take desperate measures and in doing so I feel as if she begins to degrade herself. As a queen, you should hold yourself to the highest of values. Doing things out of desperation because you just aren’t patient enough or simply don’t care about the consequences, is not the way a potential ruler should act. I think that it would’ve of been better if this queen had gone about this situation in a different and/or more regal manner.
I recommend this book to young adult readers and to those who love reading series because this book is one of four. I think that people of ages 13 and older will enjoy this book. The vocabulary was not at all difficult for me, so the book was very easy to comprehend. There are some names and words that might be difficult for people to pronounce, so I would recommend to readers is to refer to this pronunciation video. I promise you that your reading experience will be much more pleasant. A very important message can be learned from this book: you are not what they make you, you are what you make yourself.
