A New Beginning

The Start of Me and You

Dealing with loss is never easy. It’s different for everyone, and it can often have ups and downs along the way. The Start of Me and You by Emery Lord follows a 15 year old girl named Paige Hancock and her journey to coping with the loss of her boyfriend. She’s classified as a planner, someone who has their life plans and expectations set out in front of them, so the unexpected death affects her in a large way.

In attempt to feel like herself again, she decides to make a list of goals to complete before her sophomore year comes to an end. The story follows her as she tries to achieve each of her goals, and displays the struggles and triumphs she faces throughout the year.

The book is classified as fiction as well as romance, and the romance aspect is portrayed very well. It doesn’t take away from the main message of the book. If anything, it helps to show that it is possible to learn to love after loss.

I would definitely recommend this book. The beginning is a little slow, and just a tiny bit confusing. Paige is introducing her situation and all of her friends, which I didn't enjoy that much. It only takes a small portion of the book, and after that, it picks up quickly and becomes much more interesting.

Every character in this book is flawed, which makes it much more intriguing to read. In real life, there are no perfect people, it just isn’t realistic. Many books have unrealistic characters that nobody can relate to. It’s refreshing to see a book that displays teenagers in such an authentic way.

Another major positive part of this book is the friendships set up by the author. Paige has an amazing group of friends. Even though they have their ups and downs, they’re always supportive of each other and set a great example of how friends should treat one another.

The last reason why I would recommend this book is the arcs that each character has. Every character changes substantially throughout the book. It’s nice to see how each person grows from beginning to end, a quality missing in many other books I’ve read.

This book would be perfect for many different people. It can be cheesy or overdramatic at times, so if you aren’t a fan of that, it might not be the book for you. It takes a heavy topic and makes it easy for anyone to understand and connect to. If you enjoy romance books or movies, this book would be great for you. It has many aspects that make it an enjoyable book to read.
